Many of the oils, butters, tallow, botanical extracts, and other ingredients we use are organic, ethically sourced, and sustainably harvested whenever possible. We carefully select each ingredient for its quality, performance, and safety.

When it comes to color, we avoid synthetic dyes. Instead, we use naturally inspired alternatives such as mineral micas, clays, and cosmetic oxides to create the beautiful hues found throughout our collection.

Many of our products are intentionally left unscented and uncolored. For products that are fragranced, we prefer natural essential oils whenever suitable for the formulation. However, some scent profiles simply cannot be achieved with essential oils alone, and certain formulations require additional fragrance support. In those cases, we use premium fragrance oils that are phthalate-free, paraben-free, and IFRA-compliant, with documented safety and usage guidelines.

Our Approach to Preservation

One of the biggest misconceptions in the natural skincare industry is that "preservative-free" always means safer or better. In reality, products that contain water—or are regularly exposed to water—require proper preservation to prevent the growth of bacteria, mold, yeast, and other harmful microorganisms.

At Prickly Pear Botanicals, we believe in transparency and responsible formulation. While we avoid unnecessary preservatives whenever possible, we also recognize that effective preservation is essential for product safety.

When preservation is necessary, we choose gentle, well-researched options, including naturally derived and nature-identical preservatives such as Leucidal® Liquid, which is derived from fermented radish root, along with other trusted preservation systems selected for their safety and effectiveness.

Preservation is not a modern concept. Throughout history, people have used ingredients such as salt, citric acid, vinegar, and fermentation to extend shelf life and protect food and personal care products. The goal has always been the same: preventing contamination and protecting the user.

We are committed to keeping our products as clean and natural as possible, but we also believe in science-backed formulation practices that help ensure every product remains safe, stable, and effective from the day it is made until the day it is enjoyed.

When glitter is used, we choose biodegradable eco-glitter derived from plant-based materials rather than traditional plastic glitter, helping to reduce environmental impact while still adding a little magic.
